Valparaíso is one of the most picturesque ports in the world. Built on 45 hills around the harbor and the port. Valparaiso was declared a World Cultural Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2003.
Valparaíso is a city where you won’t come across any cyclists! 😉 This is a city that I particularly like. You have to spend a lot of time there, because the streets are very extensive and Valparaiso hides many secrets. A visit with a good guide will be recommended so as not to miss anything. As in all big cities, you still have to be a little careful, especially since you can easily (and quickly) go from a very touristy street to dark cul-de-sac streets…
Valparaíso, the Chilean jewel of the Pacific
Surrounded by 45 hills, here are some ideas for visiting this surprising city: Among the many funiculars, the Polanco is the most unusual. And very little known. La Artillería, one of the longest… Among the many walks, I recommend the Passage Galvez “Pasaje Galvez” (near the Gervasoni hotel). The “paseo Atkinson”, super British. The “Paseo Yugoslav”, recently renovated. Paseo 21, with the best view of the port of Valparaiso.
There are many attractions in this city: the National Congress, a modern building bequeathed by General Pinochet in the late 80s, Victoria Square surrounded by the cathedral and the municipal library, Sotomayor Square with the monument dedicated to the national hero of the War of the Pacific, Arturo Prat.
I can only recommend that you spend at least one night in this city. In the evening, it’s yet another energy that emerges there. Also, there are many charming “boutique” type hotels with decorations for all tastes. And having breakfast on the terrace with a view of the bay of Valparaiso is rather nice! Finally, do not forget to visit La Sebastiana: Pablo Neruda also lived here…
In Valparaiso, there are also hills, with beautiful viewpoints from the viewpoints of 21 de Mayo, or from the Walks “Paseos” Atkinson, Gervasoni and Yugoslavos, surrounded by beautiful houses and tangled streets. You’ll also have the possibility of taking one or more funiculars to access these viewpoints, such as Artillería, El Peral or Concepción.
